Picadillo aka Giniling – Ground Beef in Tomato Sauce

This is a copy of my Instant Pot Picadillo Recipe but this time with pictures and a regular pot.

This is officially the first entry in my “Filipino Starter Kit” series of recipes. Many times I get comments asking for recipes for people who have never cooked Filipino food before. Oftentimes they wish to cook for a partner. Since I cook for my partner every day, I figured I could relate and start sharing recipes that both he and I love.

So lets begin with………… PICADILLO!

I would describe picadillo as Filipino ground beef stew. Many Filipino dishes uses tomato as a base. Whether its tomato sauce or diced tomatoes, the acidity and sweetness of tomatoes is a very common flavor in Filipino food.

In this picadillo recipe, I’ve put potato, carrot, and peas. Feel free to substitute these for anything else you’d like but don’t skip the fish sauce. Its very important!

Ingredients

In the video, I double this recipe. If you’re doing that too, I recommend using one can of tomato sauce (per recipe) and then 1 can of diced tomatoes.

  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 3 shallots or 1/2 an onion
  • 4 small potatoes
  • ~14 baby carrots, sliced
  • 1/2 cup peas
  • 1 lbs ground beef
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoons fish sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hot sauce, Cholula brand.
  • salt & pepper, to taste

Directions

1. Cube the potatoes and chop the carrots into bite sized pieces. Mince garlic and slice shallots/onions.

2. In a large pot, heat up some oil and toss in the garlic and shallots. Fry these until aromatic and slighly browned.

3. Add the ground beef and cook until no longer raw.

4. Add the potatoes, carrots, tomato sauce, fish sauce, hot sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix this all up and cover. Simmer until potatoes and carrots are soft.

5. Finally, add the peas. Turn off the heat once the peas are hot.

6. Serve with rice!
