Crab Rangoon Pull Apart Bread (Day 23 of Bread Challenge)

Crab Rangoon Pull Apart Bread is perfect when entertaining guests or throwing parties. Follow this recipe to get a massive loaf of bread that will be quickly devoured by hungry people.

If you have been following me for a while, you will notice this is similar to Lisa Nguyen’s famous Crab Rangoon Pizza that she made for me in Hawai’i. I followed her recipe for the crab rangoon part and simply put it in a pull apart bread.

The recipe for the dough is rather standard. I did follow Paul Hollywood’s Baguettes recipe on page 65 of his book How to Bake.

Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 4 cups (480g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons (10g) salt
  • 3 teaspoons (10g) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup (250ml) water
For the topping
  • 4 sticks of imitation crab, sliced and shredded
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 1 stalk green onion, sliced
  • 1 bulb garlic, minced
  • 1/3 cup sweet chili sauce
  • wonton chips
  • pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded

Directions

For the Dough

1. Using a stand mixer with the dough hook attachment, mix the flour, salt, and yeast making sure the salt and yeast do not come into direct contact. With the mixer on low setting, slowly add the water just until the dough starts to come together.

2. Knead the dough at medium speed for about 5-7 minutes. To make sure enough gluten has developed, give your dough the window pane test

3. Transfer to dough to an oiled bowl or the dish you plan to bake your bread in, also oiled. Cover and let the dough proof for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.

4. When done proofing, punch down and begin shaping. In my video, I just reshape into a ball for my purposes.

5. Allow the dough to proof again until it has doubled in size. Depending on the size of your loaf, it can take anywhere from 20 minutes to 1 hour.

6. Bake in a preheated oven at 425F for 25 minutes. If using a dutch oven, remove the lid 15 minutes through.

For the Topping

1. In a bowl mix cream cheese, green onion, garlic, pepper, mozzarella cheese, sweet chili sauce and imitation crab.

Assembly

1. After the loaf is baked and cooled, slice the top of your bread in a cross hatch pattern. Slice about 2 to 3 inches deep.

2. Spread the topping between the cracks

3. Bake in the oven at 350F for 10 minutes. You really just need to melt the cheese.

4. Remove from the oven. Add more sweet chili sauce to taste and sprinkle wonton chips and green onions all over the top.

5. Enjoy!

Tips

You can make your own wonton chips quite easily. Watch me do it here on YouTube
