Chocolate Butter Mochi

Butter mochi is a popular Hawaiian dessert. This simple chocolate butter mochi recipe is bouncier than your typical brownie or cake. It’s loaded with dark chocolate flavor!

  • 1 ½ cup (150g) glutinous rice flour
  • ¾ cup (80g) dutch cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • a pinch of salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup (200g) sugar
  • ¼ cup butter melted
  • 1 ½ cup full fat coconut milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • chocolate chunks or chocolate chips


  • Preheat the oven to 375F (190C). In a large bowl, sift together glutinous rice flourdutch cocoa powderbaking powder, and salt. Mix to combine.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, melted butter, and sugar until combined. Add the coconut milk and vanilla extract and mix.
  • Pour the liquid mixture into the dry mixture and mix until fully combined.
  • Grease a 9x9 baking dish (or line with parchment paper/banana leaves). Pour the batter into the baking dish and top with chocolate chunks or chocolate chips.
  • Bake in the middle rack of the preheated oven for 60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 20 minutes before serving.
